Bridging Visa A (BVA)

A Bridging Visa A (BVA) allows individuals to legally remain in Australia while their substantive visa application is being processed. It is a temporary visa designed to maintain lawful status, providing peace of mind and a smooth transition while waiting for the outcome of your primary visa application

What is Bridging Visa A (BVA)?

The Bridging Visa A (BVA) is a strategic temporary residency pathway designed for individuals who are awaiting the outcome of a substantive visa application while being lawfully in Australia. It enables applicants to remain in the country legally during the processing period, providing temporary work and study rights where applicable, while ensuring continuity of lawful status.

In the 2026 migration framework, the BVA is recognized as a “Transitional Residency Gateway.” It empowers applicants to maintain stability, comply with visa conditions, and plan their next steps in Australia while their primary visa application is being assessed.

Who Can Apply for a Bridging Visa A?

The BVA is intended for individuals transitioning between visas or awaiting a decision on their substantive visa. To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be in Australia
    • The BVA is only granted to applicants physically present in Australia.
  2. Have a Pending Substantive Visa Application
    • You must have lodged an application for a new substantive visa while holding a valid visa, such as a student, work, or other temporary/permanent visa.
  3. Current Visa Must Be Valid
    • If your existing visa has expired, other bridging visas, like Bridging Visa E (BVE), may be more appropriate.
  4. Not Already Holding a Bridging Visa
    • You cannot apply for a BVA if you already hold another bridging visa.

Pro Tip: Submit your substantive visa application before your current visa expires to ensure eligibility for a BVA.

Key Features of Bridging Visa A

The BVA provides several important benefits that help maintain your lawful status in Australia while your substantive visa is being processed:

  1. Lawful Stay in Australia
    • Allows you to remain in the country legally during your visa application process, preventing gaps in lawful residence.
  2. Work Rights (Conditional)
    • Work rights are determined by the conditions of the substantive visa you have applied for.
    • If your substantive visa does not grant work rights, you may request special permission to work.
  3. No Travel Privileges
    • The BVA does not permit leaving and returning to Australia.
    • To travel internationally, you must apply for a Bridging Visa B (BVB).
  4. Automatic Grant with Substantive Visa Applications
    • In most cases, a BVA is automatically issued when a new substantive visa is applied for while your current visa is valid.
    • No separate application is typically required unless specified.

Pro Tip: Keep a copy of your BVA grant notice as proof of your visa status during your stay.
