Bridging Visa B (BVB)

A Bridging Visa B (BVB) allows individuals to temporarily leave and re-enter Australia while their substantive visa application is being processed. It is a temporary visa designed to maintain lawful status, providing flexibility and peace of mind for travel, while ensuring a smooth return to continue the processing of your primary visa application.

What is Bridging Visa B (BVB)?

The Bridging Visa B (BVB) is a strategic temporary residency pathway designed for individuals who hold a valid Bridging Visa A (BVA) and need to travel outside Australia while their substantive visa application is being processed. It enables applicants to leave and return to the country legally, maintaining their lawful status, while providing temporary work and study rights where applicable and ensuring a smooth continuation of their primary visa application.

In the 2026 migration framework, the Bridging Visa B (BVB) is recognized as a “Travel-Enabled Transitional Gateway.” It empowers holders to maintain lawful status while temporarily leaving and re-entering Australia, ensuring compliance with visa conditions and providing the flexibility to manage personal or professional obligations abroad while their primary visa application is being processed.

Eligibility Criteria for Bridging Visa B

To apply for a BVB, applicants must meet the following conditions:

  1. Hold a Substantive Visa – You must have previously held a substantive visa.
  2. Hold a BVA or BVB – You must currently hold a Bridging Visa A or B.
  3. Applied for a Substantive Visa or Judicial Review – You must have lodged your application within the prescribed timeframe.
  4. Substantial Reasons for Travel – You must provide valid reasons for needing to depart and return to Australia, with supporting documents.
  5. Age – There are no age restrictions.
  6. Character Requirement – Applicants must meet Australian immigration character standards, including no criminal convictions that could affect eligibility.

When a Bridging Visa B Becomes Effective

A BVB becomes active in the following scenarios:

  • It is granted because your substantive visa has ceased or the BVB is more advantageous than your current bridging visa.
  • Your current substantive visa ceases.

As a visa holder, you must adhere to all conditions associated with your BVB. If you still hold a substantive visa when the BVB is granted, you must continue to comply with the substantive visa conditions until it ceases, after which the BVB conditions take effect.

Judicial Review Considerations

When undergoing judicial review, a BVB allows you to:

  • Stay legally in Australia until a final decision is made on your substantive visa or related proceedings.
  • Travel outside and re-enter Australia within the specified travel period.

Comply with all relevant immigration laws and provide accurate information in your application to ensure smooth processing.

Duration of Stay

The BVB remains valid until one of the following occurs:

  • Your substantive visa is granted or refused.
  • A merits or judicial review decision is made.
  • You withdraw your visa application or review.
  • A tribunal informs you it has no jurisdiction.
  • Immigration cancels your BVB or the substantive visa linked to it.

Note: BVB cannot be extended. To stay longer, you must apply for a new visa.

Family Members and BVB

If you applied for a substantive visa with family members, they can be included in your BVB application as part of your family unit. One application and one visa fee may cover all included family members, provided each meets the BVB requirements. Only include family members with a substantial need to travel; others may remain on their current bridging visas.

Cost and Processing Time

  • Application Fee: AUD 165
  • Processing Time: No standard processing times are provided.
    • Delays may occur if forms are incomplete, required documents are missing, or additional verification is needed.

To avoid delays, ensure your application is complete, accurate, and responsive to requests for further information.

Responsibilities of BVB Holders

As a BVB holder (and for included family members):

  • Comply with all Australian laws.
  • Follow the conditions of your current visa.
  • Adhere to the conditions of the BVB once it becomes active.

Work and travel conditions will be communicated upon visa grant.

Travel Period and Renewal

  • The travel period will be specified when your BVB is granted.
  • If the travel period ends and you wish to travel again, you must apply for a new BVB and be granted it before leaving Australia.
  • If you are outside Australia when the travel period ends, the BVB will cease, and you will not be able to return on that visa.

Bridging Visa B Application Steps

Pre-Application:

  • Ensure you hold a BVA or BVB and have a valid passport.
  • Apply for the BVB no earlier than three months and no later than two weeks before intended travel.

Document Collection:

  • Gather all required documents for the BVB application.

Application Submission:

  • Apply through the same method as your substantive visa:
    • If online via ImmiAccount, apply for BVB through ImmiAccount.
    • If by paper form or for judicial review, submit BVB by web form.
  • You and any included family members must be in Australia when lodging the application.

Post-Application:

  • Await the visa outcome.
  • If granted, you will receive a visa grant number, start date, and conditions.
  • Keep a copy of this information with you while in Australia.
